Six years after it has been introduced Ferrari 458 Italia has been succeeded by a Ferrari 488 GTB 2016. Launched in February, 488 GTB had its world premiere on Geneva Motor Show in March of 2015. The greatest surprise about it is that Italian engineers abandoned the concept of naturally aspired engine and fitted 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB with a turbo charged one. This allowed them to use 3.9-liter V8 engine, instead of 4.5-liter V8 unit they used for 458 Italia. The advantages include far more horse power with better fuel economy and less pollution and CO2 emission.
2016 Ferrari 488 GTB redesign
The designers have managed to rethink almost every detail on the outside of the new Ferrari 488 GTB, and yet retain the resemblance to the 458 Italia. The front bumper is completely redesigned, with three large air intakes to keep the nose of the car glued to the surface at high speeds and enhance its aggressive look. On the sides, the designers created large air intakes above the rear wheels and triangular area around the door handles, a tribute to the original 308 GTB from 1975. The rear now has two instead of three exhaust pipes and a large central light, similar to the F1 cars. Apart from looking beautiful, the new Ferrari 488 GTB 2016 manages to have a drag coefficient of 1.67 and incredible 50% more down force than its predecessor.
While everything inside the 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB looks and feels luxurious, the car’s sporting nature is shown through Spartan interior. Centred on the driver, the cockpit is stripped of all unnecessary details, to avoid the distractions. There are less knobs and buttons compared to 458. The central piece is the multifunctional three spoke steering wheel, with large start button and recognizable prancing horse in the center.
Ferrari 488 GTB specs
Newly developed 3.9-liter V8 engine is based on Ferrari F154 engine, used in California and Maserati Quattroporte GTS. The all-aluminium engine supplies 661 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 561 pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm. F154 is the first turbo charged Ferrari engine since 1987 and so far this move has paid off well for them. The compressor uses the same titanium aluminum alloy used in jet engine production. The only option for the transmission is the 7 gear dual clutch F1 gearbox, based on 458 Italia’s transmission and made by GETRAG.
Ferrari 488 GTB 0-60
Testing on legendary Fiorano track showed that the only thing faster than Ferrari 488 GTB 2016 is LaFerari. 488 GTB circled the lap in 1:23 minutes, which is whole 2 seconds faster than 458 Italia, half a second faster that 458 Speciale and on par with F12 Berlinetta, despite having significantly less horse power. The new 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB goes from 0-124 mph in 8.3 second and from 0-60 in 3. Part of the success goes to the redesigned body, which was the most challenging part in the creation of 488 GTB, according to Modena engineers.
Ferrari 488 GTB price and release date
Estimated price for 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB will be around $275,000 and, as usual, people who already own a Ferrari will be given priority. The Ferrari 488 GTB for sale in the United States should be available in the summer of 2015.
